If you will return,O Israel, saysthe LORD,returnto me: and if you will put awayyour abominationsout of my sight, then shall you not remove.
And you shall swear,The LORDlives,in truth,in judgment, and in righteousness;and the nationsshall blessthemselves in him, and in him shall they glory.
For thus saysthe LORDto the menof Judahand Jerusalem,Break upyour fallow ground, and sownot among thorns.
Circumciseyourselves to the LORD,and take awaythe foreskinsof your heart, you menof Judahand inhabitantsof Jerusalem:lest my furycome forthlike fire, and burnthat none can quenchit, becauseof the evilof your doings.
Disaster from the North
Declareyou in Judah, and publishin Jerusalem;and say,Blowyou the trumpetin the land:cry, gather together, and say,Assembleyourselves, and let us gointo the defencedcities.
Set upthe standardtoward Zion:retire, staynot: for I will bringevilfrom the north, and a greatdestruction.
The lionhas come upfrom his thicket, and the destroyerof the Gentilesis on his way;he is gone forthfrom his placeto makeyour landdesolate;andyour citiesshall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
For this girdyou with sackcloth, lamentand howl:for the fierceangerof the LORDis not turned backfrom us.
And it shall happen at that day, saysthe LORD,thatthe heartof the kingshall perish, and the heartof the princes;and the priestsshall be astonished, and the prophetsshall wonder.
Then saidI, Ah,LordGOD!surelyyou have greatlydeceivedthis peopleand Jerusalem, saying,You shall have peace;whereas the swordreachesto the soul.
At that timeshall it be saidto this peopleand to Jerusalem,A drywindof the high placesin the wildernesstowardthe daughterof my people, not to fan,nor to cleanse,
Evena fullwindfrom thoseplacesshall cometo me: now also will I givesentenceagainst them.
Look, he shall come upas clouds, and his chariotsshall beas a whirlwind:his horsesare swifterthan eagles.Woeto us! for we are plundered.
O Jerusalem, washyour heartfrom wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your vainthoughtslodgewithinyou?
For a voicedeclaresfrom Dan,and publishesafflictionfrom mountEphraim.
Make you mentionto the nations;look, publishagainst Jerusalem, thatwatcherscomefrom a farcountry, and give outtheir voiceagainst the citiesof Judah.
As keepersof a field, are they against her round about;because she has been rebelliousagainst me, saysthe LORD.
Your wayand your doingshave procuredthesethingsto you; thisisyour wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reachesto your heart.
Lamentation for Judah
My bowels,my bowels!I am painedat my veryheart;my heartmakes a noisein me; I cannot hold my peace, because you have heard,O my soul, the soundof the trumpet, the alarmof war.
Destructionupon destructionis cried;for the whole landis plundered:suddenlyare my tentsplundered, andmy curtainsin a moment.
How long shall I seethe standard, andhearthe soundof the trumpet?
For my peopleisfoolish, they have not knownme; theyaresottishchildren, and they have none understanding:theyarewiseto do evil, but to do goodthey have no knowledge.
I sawthe earth,and, look,it waswithout form,and void;and the heavens,and theyhadno light.
I sawthe mountains, and, look, they trembled, and all the hillsmoved lightly.
I saw, and, look, there wasno man,and all the birdsof the heavenswere fled.
I saw, and, look, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all its cities were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger.
For thus has the LORDsaid,The whole landshall be desolate;yet will I not makea full end.
For this shall the earthmourn, and the heavensabovebe black:because I have spokenit, I have purposedit, and will not repent, neither will I turn backfrom it.
The whole cityshall fleefor the noiseof the horsemenand bowmen;they shall gointo thickets, and climb upupon the rocks:every cityshall beforsaken, and not a mandwelltherein.
And when you are plundered, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with crimson, though you deck you with ornaments of gold, though you rent your face with painting, in vain shall you make yourself fair; your lovers will despise you, they will seek your life.
For I have hearda voiceas of a woman in labor, andthe anguishas of her that brings forth her first child, the voiceof the daughterof Zion, thatbewailsherself, thatspreadsher hands, saying, Woeisme now! for my soulis weariedbecause of murderers.
