Now Pashurthe sonof Immerthe priest,whowasalso chiefgovernorin the houseof the LORD,heardthat Jeremiahprophesiedthese things.
Then PashurstruckJeremiahthe prophet,and puthim in the stocksthatwerein the highgateof Benjamin,whichwasby the houseof the LORD.
And it happened on the next day, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah to him, The LORD has not called your name Pashur, but Magor-missabib.
For thus says the LORD, Look, I will make you a terror to yourself, and to all your friends: and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall look it: and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword.
Moreover I will deliver all the strength of this city, and all its labors, and all its precious things, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies, which shall plunder them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.
And you, Pashur,and all that dwellin your houseshall gointo captivity:and you shall cometo Babylon,and there you shall die,and shall be buriedthere, you, and all your friends,to whom you have prophesiedlies.
Jeremiah’s Complaint
O LORD,you have deceivedme, and I was deceived:you are strongerthan I, and have prevailed:I am in derisiondaily,every one mocksme.
For sinceI spoke,I cried out,I criedviolenceand plunder;because the wordof the LORDwas made a reproachto me, and a derision,daily.
Then I said,I will not make mentionof him, nor speakany more in his name.Buthis wordwas in my heartas a burningfireshut upin my bones,and I was wearywith forbearing,and I couldnot stay.
For I heardthe defamingof many,fearon every side.Report,say they, and we will reportit. All my familiarswatchedfor my halting,saying, Perhaps he will be enticed,and we shall prevailagainst him, and we shall takeour revengeon him.
But the LORDiswith me as a mightyterrible one:therefore my persecutorsshall stumble,and they shall not prevail:they shall be greatlyashamed;for they shall not prosper:theireverlastingconfusionshall never be forgotten.
But, O LORDof hosts,that trythe righteous,andseethe inmost thoughtsand the heart,let me seeyour vengeanceon them: for to you have I openedmy cause.
Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD: for he has delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.
Cursedbethe dayin which I was born:let not the dayin which my motherboreme be blessed.
Cursedbethe manwho brought tidingsto my father,saying,A manchildis bornto you; making him veryglad.
And let that manbe as the citieswhich the LORDoverthrew,and repentednot: and let him hearthe cryin the morning,and the shoutingat noontide;
Because he slewme not from the womb;or that my mothermight have been my grave,and her wombto bealwaysgreatwith me.
Why came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?
