Arise,and go downto the potter’shouse,and there I will cause you to hearmy words.
Then I went downto the potter’shouse,and indeed,he workeda workon the wheels.
And the vesselthat he madeof claywas marredin the handof the potter:so he madeit againanothervessel,as seemedgoodto the potterto makeit.
Then the wordof the LORDcame to me, saying,
O houseof Israel,cannotI dowith you as this potter?saysthe LORD.Look, as the clayisin the potter’shand,soareyou in my hand,O houseof Israel.
At whatinstantI shall speakconcerning a nation,and concerning a kingdom,to pluck up,and to pull down,and to destroyit;
If that nation,against whom I have pronounced,turnfrom their evil,I will repentof the evilthat I thoughtto doto them.
Andat whatinstantI shall speakconcerning a nation,and concerning a kingdom,to buildand to plantit;
If it doevilin my sight,that it obeynot my voice,then I will repentof the good,with which I saidI would benefitthem.
Now therefore go to, speakto the menof Judah,and to the inhabitantsof Jerusalem,saying,Thus saysthe LORD;Look, I frameevilagainst you, and devisea deviceagainst you: returnyou now every onefrom his evilway,and make your waysand your doingsgood.
And they said,There is no hope:but we will walkafterour own devices,and we will every onedothe imaginationof his evilheart.
Therefore thus saysthe LORD;Askyou now among the pagans,who has heardsuch things: the virginof Israelhas donea veryhorrible thing.
Willa manleavethe snowof Lebanonwhich comesfrom the rockof the field?orshall the coldflowingwatersthat come from another placebe forsaken?
Because my peoplehas forgottenme, they have burned incenseto vanity,and they have caused them to stumblein their waysfromthe ancientpaths,to walkin paths,ina waynot cast up;
To maketheir landdesolate,anda perpetualhissing;every one that passesthereby shall be astonished,and waghis head.
I will scatterthem as with an eastwindbeforethe enemy;I will showthem the back,and not the face,in the dayof their calamity.
Another Plot against Jeremiah
Then they said, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.
Give heedto me, O LORD,and listento the voiceof them that contendwith me.
Shall evilbe recompensedfor good?for they have duga pitfor my soul.Rememberthat I stoodbeforeyou to speakgoodfor them,andto turn awayyour wrathfrom them.
Therefore deliver uptheir childrento the famine,and pour outtheirbloodby the forceof the sword;and let their wivesbe bereavedof their children, andbewidows;and let their menbe putto death;lettheir young menbeslainby the swordin battle.
Let a crybe heardfrom their houses,when you shall bringa troopsuddenlyupon them: for they have duga pitto takeme, and hidsnaresfor my feet.
Yet, LORD, you know all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from your sight, but let them be overthrown before you; deal thus with them in the time of your anger.
