Now it happened in the fourteenthyearof kingHezekiah, thatSennacheribkingof Assyriacame upagainst all the defencedcitiesof Judah, and tookthem.
And the kingof AssyriasentRabshakehfrom Lachishto Jerusalemto kingHezekiahwith a greatarmy. And he stoodby the conduitof the upperpoolin the highwayof the fuller’sfield.
Then came forthto him Eliakim,Hilkiah’sson, which was over the house, and Shebnathe scribe, and Joah,Asaph’sson, the recorder.
And Rabshakeh said to them, Say now to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this in which you trust?
I say,say you, (butthey are butvainwords)I havecounseland strengthfor war:now on whom do you trust, that you rebelagainst me?
Look, you trustin the staffof this brokenreed,on Egypt;on which if a manlean,it will gointo his hand, and pierceit: soisPharaohkingof Egyptto all that trustin him.
But if you sayto me, We trustin the LORDour God:is itnot he, whose high placesand whose altarsHezekiahhas taken away, and saidto Judahand to Jerusalem,You shall worshipbeforethis altar?
Now therefore give pledges,I pray you, to my masterthe kingof Assyria, and I will giveyou two thousandhorses,if you are ableon your part to setridersupon them.
How then will you turn awaythe faceof onecaptainof the leastof my master’sservants, and put your truston Egyptfor chariotsand for horsemen?
And am I now come upwithoutthe LORDagainst this landto destroyit? the LORDsaidto me, Go upagainst this land, and destroyit.
Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah to Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray you, to your servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
But Rabshakehsaid,Has my mastersentme to your masterand to you to speakthese words?has henotsent meto the menthat situpon the wall, that they may eattheir own dung, and drinktheir own pisswith you?
Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
Thus saysthe king,Let not Hezekiahdeceiveyou: for he shall not be ableto deliveryou.
Neither let Hezekiahmake you trustin the LORD,saying,The LORDwill surelydeliverus: this cityshall not be deliveredinto the handof the kingof Assyria.
Listennot to Hezekiah:for thus saysthe kingof Assyria,Makean agreementwith mebya present,and come outto me: and eatyou every oneof his vine,and every oneof his fig tree,and drinkyou every onethe watersof his own cistern;
Until I comeand take you awayto a landlike your own land,a landof grainand wine,a landof breadand vineyards.
Bewarelest Hezekiahpersuadeyou, saying,The LORDwill deliverus. Has anyof the godsof the nationsdeliveredhis landout of the handof the kingof Assyria?
Wherearethe godsof Hamathand Arphad?wherearethe godsof Sepharvaim?and have they deliveredSamariaout of my hand?
Whoare theyamong all the godsof these lands, that have deliveredtheir landout of my hand, that the LORDshould deliverJerusalemout of my hand?
But they held their peace, and answeredhim not a word:for the king’scommandmentwas, saying,Answerhim not.
Then cameEliakim,the sonof Hilkiah,thatwasover the household,and Shebnathe scribe,and Joah,the sonof Asaph,the recorder,to Hezekiahwiththeirclothesrent,and toldhim the wordsof Rabshakeh.
