And it happened, when Davidand his menhad cometo Ziklagon the thirdday,that the Amalekiteshad invadedthe south,and Ziklag,and struckZiklag,and burnedit with fire;
And had taken the womencaptives,that were therein: they slewnot any,either greator small,but carried them away,and wenton their way.
So Davidand his mencameto the city,and indeed, it was burnedwith fire;and their wives,and their sons,and their daughters,were taken captives.
Then Davidand the peoplethat were with him lifted uptheir voiceand wept,until they had no more powerto weep.
And David’stwowiveswere taken captives,Ahinoamthe Jezreelitess,and Abigailthe wifeof Nabalthe Carmelite.
And Davidwas greatlydistressed;for the peoplespokeof stoninghim, because the soulof all the peoplewas grieved,every manfor his sonsand for his daughters:but Davidencouragedhimself in the LORDhis God.
David Destroys the Amalekites
And Davidsaidto Abiatharthe priest,Ahimelech’sson,I pray you, bring me herethe ephod.And Abiatharbroughtthere the ephodto David.
And Davidinquiredat the LORD,saying,Shall I pursueafterthis troop?shall I overtakethem? And he answeredhim, Pursue:for you shall surelyovertakethem, and without failrecoverall.
So Davidwent,he and the sixhundredmenthat were with him, and cameto the brookBesor,where those that were left behindstayed.
But Davidpursued,he and fourhundredmen:for two hundredremained behind,which were so faintthat they could not go overthe brookBesor.
And they foundan Egyptianin the field,and broughthim to David,and gavehim bread,and he did eat;and they made him drinkwater;
And they gavehim a pieceof a cakeof figs, and twoclusters of raisins:and when he had eaten,his spiritcame againto him: for he had eatenno bread,nor drunkany water,threedaysand threenights.
And Davidsaidto him, To whom belong you? and whence are you? And he said,I am a young manof Egypt,servantto an Amalekite;and my masterleftme, because threedaysagone I fell sick.
We made an invasionupon the southof the Cherethites,and upon the coast which belongs to Judah,and upon the southof Caleb;and we burnedZiklagwith fire.
And Davidsaidto him, Can you bring me downto this company?And he said,Swearto me by God,that you will neither killme, nordeliverme into the handsof my master,and I will bring you downto this company.
And when he had brought him down,look, they were spread abroadupon allthe earth,eatingand drinking,and dancing,because of all the greatplunderthat they had takenout of the landof the Philistines,and out of the landof Judah.
And Davidstruckthem from the twilighteven to the eveningof the next day:and there escapednot a manof them, save fourhundredyoungmen,which rodeupon camels,and fled.
And Davidrecoveredall that the Amalekiteshad carried away:and Davidrescuedhis twowives.
And there was nothing lackingto them, neithersmallnor great,neither sonsnor daughters,neither plunder,nor anything that they had takento them: Davidrecoveredall.
And Davidtookall the flocksand the herds,which they drovebeforethoseother cattle,and said,This is David’splunder.
The Spoils Are Divided
And Davidcameto the two hundredmen,which were so faintthat they could not followDavid,whom they had made also to remainat the brookBesor:and they went forthto meetDavid,and to meetthe peoplethat were with him: and when Davidcame nearto the people,he salutedthem.
Then answeredall the wickedmenand men of Belial,of thosethat wentwith David,and said,Because they wentnot with us, we will not givethem ought of the plunderthat we have recovered,save to every manhis wifeand his children,that they may lead them away,and depart.
Then saidDavid,You shall not do so,my brothers,with that which the LORDhas givenus, who has preservedus, and deliveredthe companythat cameagainst us into our hand.
For who will listento you in this matter?but as his partis that goes downto the battle,so shall his partbe that delaysby the stuff:they shall partalike.
And it was so from that dayforward,that he madeit a statuteand an ordinancefor Israelto this day.
And when Davidcameto Ziklag,he sentof the plunderto the eldersof Judah,even to his friends,saying,Look a presentfor you of the plunderof the enemiesof the LORD;
To themwhich were in Bethel,and to them which were in southRamoth,and to them which were in Jattir,
And to them which were in Aroer,and to them which were in Siphmoth,and to them which were in Eshtemoa,
And to them which were in Rachal,and to them which were in the citiesof the Jerahmeelites,and to them which were in the citiesof the Kenites,
And to them which were in Hormah, and to them which were in Chor-ashan, and to them which were in Athach,
And to them which were in Hebron,and to all the placeswhere Davidhimself and his menwere wont to haunt.
