Then Jezebelsenta messengerto Elijah,saying,So let the godsdoto me, and morealso, if I makenot your lifeas the lifeof oneof them by tomorrowabout this time.
And when he sawthat, he arose,and wentfor his life,and cameto Beersheba,which belongs to Judah,and lefthis servantthere.
But he himself wenta day’sjourneyinto the wilderness,and cameand sat downunder ajuniper tree:and he requestedfor himselfthat he might die;and said,It is enough;now, O LORD,take awaymy life;for I am not betterthan my fathers.
And as he layand sleptunder ajuniper tree,look, then an angeltouchedhim, and saidto him, Ariseand eat.
And he looked,and indeed, there was a cakebaken on the coals,and a cruseof waterat his head.And he did eatand drink,and laid him downagain.
And the angelof the LORDcame againthe second time,and touchedhim, and said,Ariseand eat;because the journeyis too greatfor you.
And he arose,and did eatand drink,and wentin the strengthof that foodfortydaysand fortynightsto Horebthe mountof God.
The LORD Speaks to Elijah at Horeb
And he camethere to a cave,and lodgedthere; and indeed, the wordof the LORDcame to him, and he saidto him, What do you do here, Elijah?
And he said,I have been veryjealousfor the LORDGodof hosts:for the childrenof Israelhave forsakenyour covenant,thrown downyour altars,and slainyour prophetswith the sword;and I, even I only, am left;and they seekmy life,to take it away.
And he said,Go forth,and standupon the mountbeforethe LORD.And indeed, the LORDpassed by,and a greatand strongwindrentthe mountains,and broke in piecesthe rocksbeforethe LORD;but the LORDwas not in the wind:and afterthe windan earthquake;but the LORDwas not in the earthquake:
And afterthe earthquakea fire;but the LORDwas not in the fire:and afterthe firea stillsmallvoice.
And it was so, when Elijahheardit, that he wrappedhis facein his mantle,and went out,and stoodin the entering inof the cave.And indeed, there came a voiceto him, and said,What do you do here, Elijah?
And he said,I have been veryjealousfor the LORDGodof hosts:because the childrenof Israelhave forsakenyour covenant,thrown downyour altars,and slainyour prophetswith the sword;and I, even I only, am left;and they seekmy life,to take it away.
And the LORDsaidto him, Go,returnon your wayto the wildernessof Damascus:and when you come,anointHazaelto be kingover Syria:
And Jehu the son of Nimshi shall you anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shall you anoint to be prophet in your room.
And it shall happen, that him that escapesthe swordof Hazaelshall Jehuslay:and him that escapesfrom the swordof Jehushall Elishaslay.
Yet I have leftme seventhousandin Israel,all the kneeswhich have not bowedto Baal,and every mouthwhich has not kissedhim.
The Call of Elisha
So he departedfrom there, and foundElishathe sonof Shaphat,who was plowingwith twelveyokeof oxen beforehim, and he with the twelfth:and Elijahpassedby him, and casthis mantleupon him.
And he leftthe oxen,and ranafterElijah,and said,Let me, I pray you, kissmy fatherand my mother,and then I will followyou. And he saidto him, Go backagain:for what have I doneto you?
And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and served him.
