Now there crieda certainwomanof the wivesof the sonsof the prophetsto Elisha,saying,Your servantmy husbandis dead;and you knowthat your servantdid fearthe LORD:and the creditorhas cometo taketo him my twosonsto be slaves.
And Elishasaidto her, What shall I dofor you? tellme, what haveyou in the house?And she said,Your maidservanthas not anything in the house,save a potof oil.
Then he said,Go,borrowyou vesselsabroadof all your neighbors,even emptyvessels;borrow not a few.
And when you have come in,you shall shutthe doorupon you and upon your sons,and shall pour outinto all those vessels,and you shall set asidethat which is full.
So she wentfrom him, and shutthe doorupon her and uponher sons,whobroughtthe vessels to her; and she poured out.
And it happened, when the vesselswere full,that she saidto her son,Bringme yet a vessel.And he saidto her, There is not a vesselmore. And the oilstayed.
Then she cameand toldthe manof God.And he said,Go,sellthe oil,and payyour debt,and liveyou and your childrenof the rest.
The Shunammite Woman
And it fell on a day,that Elishapassedto Shunem,where was a greatwoman;and she constrainedhim to eatbread.And so it was, that as oftenas he passed by,he turnedin there to eatbread.
And she saidto her husband,Look now, I perceivethat this is a holymanof God,which passesby us continually.
Let us makea littlechamber,I pray you, on the wall;and let us setfor him there a bed,and a table,and a stool,and a lampstand:and it shall be, when he comesto us, that he shall turnin there.
And it fell on a day,that he camethere, and he turnedinto the chamber,and laythere.
And he saidto Gehazihis servant,Callthis Shunammite.And when he had calledher, she stoodbeforehim.
And he saidto him, Saynow to her, Look, you have been carefulfor us with all this care;what is to be donefor you? wouldyou be spokento the king,or to the captainof the host?And she answered,I dwellamongmy own people.
And he said,What then is to be donefor her? And Gehazianswered,Trulyshe has no child,and her husbandis old.
And he said,Callher. And when he had calledher, she stoodin the door.
And he said,About this season,according to the timeof life,you shall embracea son.And she said,No, my lord,you manof God,do not lieto your maidservant.
And the womanconceived,and borea sonat that seasonthat Elishahad saidto her, according to the timeof life.
Elisha Raises the Shunammite’s Son
And when the childwas grown,it fell on a day,that he went outto his fatherto the reapers.
And he saidto his father,My head,my head.And he saidto a lad,Carryhim to his mother.
And when he had takenhim, and broughthim to his mother,he saton her kneestill noon,and then died.
And she went up,and laidhim on the bedof the manof God,and shutthe door upon him, and went out.
And she calledto her husband,and said,Sendme, I pray you, oneof the young men,and oneof the donkeys,that I may runto the manof God,and come again.
And he said, Why will you go to him today? it is neither new moon, nor Sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.
Then she saddleda donkey,and saidto her servant,Drive,and go forward;slacknot your ridingfor me, except I bidyou.
So she went and came to the man of God to mount Carmel. And it happened, when the man of God saw her far off, he said to Gehazi his servant, Look, yonder is that Shunammite:
Runnow, I pray you, to meether, and sayto her, Is it wellwith you? is it wellwith your husband?is it wellwith the child?And she answered,It is well.
And when she cameto the manof Godto the hill,she caughthim by the feet:but Gehazicame nearto thrust her away.And the manof Godsaid,Let her alone;for her soulis troubledwithin her: and the LORDhas hidit from me, and has not toldme.
Then she said,Did I desirea sonof my lord?did I not say,Do not deceiveme?
Then he saidto Gehazi,Gird upyour loins,and takemy staffin your hand,and go your way:if you meetany man,salutehim not; and if anysaluteyou, answer him not again:and laymy staffupon the faceof the child.
And the motherof the childsaid,As the LORDlives,and as your soullives,I will not leaveyou. And he arose,and followedher.
And Gehazipassed onbeforethem, and laidthe staffupon the faceof the child;but there was neither voice,nor hearing.Therefore he went againto meethim, and toldhim, saying,The childis not awaked.
And when Elishahad comeinto the house,look, the childwas dead,and laidupon his bed.
He went intherefore, and shutthe doorupon them two,and prayedto the LORD.
And he went up,and layupon the child,and puthis mouthupon his mouth,and his eyesupon his eyes,and his handsupon his hands:and he stretchedhimself upon the child; and the fleshof the childgrew warm.
Then he returned, and walked in the house back and forth; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
And he calledGehazi,and said,Callthis Shunammite.So he calledher. And when she had come into him, he said,Take upyour son.
Then she went in,and fellat his feet,and bowedherself to the ground,and took upher son,and went out.
Elisha Purifies the Poisonous Stew
And Elishacame againto Gilgal:and there was a dearthin the land;and the sonsof the prophetswere sittingbeforehim: and he saidto his servant,Seton the greatpot,and seethepottagefor the sonsof the prophets.
And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and its gathered wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not.
So they poured out for the men to eat. And it happened, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O you man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat of it.
But he said,Then bringmeal.And he castit into the pot;and he said,Pour outfor the people,that they may eat.And there was no harmin the pot.
Feeding a Hundred Men
And there came a man from Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of grain in its husk. And he said, Give to the people, that they may eat.
And his servitor said, What, should I set this before a hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus says the LORD, They shall eat, and shall its leave.
So he set it before them, and they did eat, and its left, according to the word of the LORD.
