And Jacobsentmessengersbefore himto Esauhis brotherto the landof Seir,the countryof Edom.
And he commandedthem, saying,Thus shall you speakto my lordEsau;Your servantJacobsaysthus, I have sojournedwith Laban,and stayed thereuntil now:
And I have oxen,and donkeys,flocks,and menservants,and womenservants:and I have sentto tellmy lord,that I may findgracein your sight.
And the messengersreturnedto Jacob,saying,We cameto your brotherEsau,and also he comesto meet you,and four hundredmenwith him.
Then Jacobwas greatlyafraidand distressed:and he dividedthe peoplethatwaswith him, and the flocks,and herds,and the camels,into twobands;
And said,If Esaucometo the onecompany,and strike it,then the other companywhich is leftshall escape.
And Jacobsaid,O Godof my fatherAbraham,and Godof my fatherIsaac,the LORDwhich saidto me, Returnto your country,and to your kindred,and I will deal wellwith you:
I am not worthy of the leastof all the mercies,and of all the truth,which you have shownto your servant;for with my staffI passed overthis Jordan;and now I am become twobands.
Deliver me,I pray you, from the handof my brother,from the handof Esau:for I fearhim, lest he will comeand strike me,andthe motherwiththe children.
And you said,I will surelydo you good,and makeyour seedas the sandof the sea,which cannot be numberedfor multitude.
And he lodgedthere that same night;and tookof that which cameto his handa presentfor Esauhis brother;
Two hundredshe goats,and twentyhe goats,two hundredewes,and twentyrams,
Thirtymilchcamelswith their colts,fortycows,and tenbulls,twentyshe donkeys,and tenfoals.
And he deliveredtheminto the handof his servants,every droveby themselves; and saidto his servants,Pass overbefore me,and puta spacebetweendroveanddrove.
And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you, saying, Whose are you? and where are you going? and whose are these before you?
Then you shall say,They beyour servantJacob’s;itisa presentsentto my lordEsau:and indeed, also heisbehind us.
And sohe commandedthe second,and the third,and all that followedthe droves,saying,On this mannershall you speakto Esau,when you findhim.
And saymoreover,Look, your servantJacobisbehind us.For he said,I will appeasehimwith the presentthat goesbefore me,and afterwardI will seehis face;perhaps he will acceptof me.
So wentthe presentoverbefore him:and himself lodgedthat nightin the company.
Jacob Wrestles with God
And he rose upthat night,and tookhis twowives,and his twowomenservants,and his elevensons,and passed overthe fordJabbok.
And he took them,and sent them overthe brook,and sent overthat he had.
And Jacobwas leftalone; and there wrestleda manwith him until the breakingof the day.
And when he sawthat he prevailednot against him, he touchedthe hollow of his thigh;and the hollowof Jacob’sthighwas out of joint,as he wrestledwith him.
And he said,Let me go,for the daybreaks.And he said,I will not let you go,exceptyou blessme.
And he saidto him, Whatisyour name?And he said,Jacob.
And he said,Your nameshall be calledno more Jacob,but Israel:for as a prince have you powerwith Godand with men,and have prevailed.
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray you, your name. And he said, Why is it that you do ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
And Jacobcalledthe nameof the placePeniel:for I have seenGodfaceto face,and my lifeis preserved.
And as he passed overPenuelthe sunroseupon him, and he haltedupon his thigh.
Therefore the childrenof Israeleatnotofthe sinewwhich shrank,whichisupon the hollowof the thigh,to this day:because he touchedthe hollowof Jacob’sthighin the sinewthat shrank.
