Sonof man,speakto the childrenof your people,and sayto them, When I bringthe swordupon a land,if the peopleof the landtakeamanof their coasts,and sethim for their watchman:
If when he seesthe swordcomeupon the land,he blowthe trumpet,and warnthe people;
Then whoeverhearsthe soundof the trumpet,and takes not warning;if the swordcome,and take him away,his bloodshall be upon his own head.
He heardthe soundof the trumpet,and took not warning;his bloodshall be upon him. But he that takes warningshall deliverhis soul.
But if the watchmanseethe swordcome,and blownot the trumpet,and the peoplebe not warned;if the swordcome,and takeanypersonfrom among them, he is taken awayin his iniquity;but his bloodwill I requireat the watchman’shand.
So you, O sonof man,I have setyou a watchmanto the houseof Israel;therefore you shall hearthe wordat my mouth,and warnthem from me.
When I sayto the wicked,O wickedman, you shall surelydie;if you do not speakto warnthe wickedfrom his way,that wickedmanshall diein his iniquity;but his bloodwill I requireat your hand.
Nevertheless, if you warnthe wickedof his wayto turnfrom it; if he do not turnfrom his way,he shall diein his iniquity;but you have deliveredyour soul.
The Message of the Watchman
Therefore, O you sonof man,speakto the houseof Israel;Thus you speak,saying,If our transgressionsand our sinsbeupon us, and we pine awayin them, how should we then live?
Sayto them,AsI live,saysthe LordGOD,I have no pleasurein the deathof the wicked;but that the wickedturnfrom his wayand live:turnyou, turnyou from your evilways;for why will you die,O houseof Israel?
Therefore, you sonof man,sayto the childrenof your people,The righteousnessof the righteousshall not deliverhim in the dayof his transgression:as for the wickednessof the wicked,he shall not fallthereby in the daythat he turnsfrom his wickedness;neither shall the righteousbe ableto livefor hisrighteousnessin the daythat he sins.
When I shall sayto the righteous,thathe shall surelylive;if he trustto his own righteousness,and commitiniquity,all his righteousnessesshall not be remembered;but for his iniquitythat he has committed,he shall diefor it.
Again, when I sayto the wicked,You shall surelydie;if he turnfrom his sin,and dothat which is lawfuland right;
Ifthe wickedrestorethe pledge,give againthat he had robbed,walkin the statutesof life,without committinginiquity;he shall surelylive,he shall not die.
None of his sinsthat he has committedshall be mentionedto him: he has donethat which is lawfuland right;he shall surelylive.
Yet the childrenof your peoplesay,The wayof the Lordis not equal:but as for them, their wayis not equal.
When the righteousturnsfrom his righteousness,and commitsiniquity,he shall even diethereby.
But if the wickedturnfrom his wickedness,and dothat which is lawfuland right,he shall livethereby.
Yet you say,The wayof the Lordis not equal.O you houseof Israel,I will judgeyou every oneafter his ways.
Word of Jerusalem’s Fall
And it happened in the twelfthyearof our captivity,in the tenthmonth, in the fifthdayof the month,thatone that had escapedout of Jerusalemcameto me, saying,The cityis struck.
Now the handof the LORDwas upon me in the evening,beforehe that was escapedcame;and had openedmy mouth,until he cameto me in the morning;and my mouthwas opened,and I was no more mute.
Then the wordof the LORDcame to me, saying,
Sonof man,they that inhabitthose wastesof the landof Israelspeak,saying,Abrahamwas one,and he inheritedthe land:but wearemany;the landis givenus for inheritance.
Therefore sayto them, Thus saysthe LordGOD;You eatwith the blood,and lift upyour eyestoward your idols,and shedblood:and shall you possessthe land?
You standupon your sword,you workabomination,and you defileevery onehis neighbor’swife:and shall you possessthe land?
Say you thus to them, Thus says the Lord GOD; As I live, surely they that are in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that are in the forts and in the caves shall die of the pestilence.
For I will laythe landmostdesolate,and the pompof her strengthshall cease;and the mountainsof Israelshall be desolate,that none shall pass through.
Then shall they knowthat Iamthe LORD,when I have laidthe landmostdesolatebecause of all their abominationswhich they have committed.
Also, you sonof man,the childrenof your peoplestill are talkingagainstyou by the wallsand in the doorsof the houses,and speakoneto another,every oneto his brother,saying,Come,I pray you, and hearwhat is the wordthat comes forthfrom the LORD.
And they cometo you as the peoplecomes,and they sitbeforeyouasmy people,and they hearyour words,but they will not dothem: for with their mouththey showmuch love,buttheir heartgoesaftertheir covetousness.
And, look, you are to them as a very lovely song of one that has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear your words, but they do them not.
And when this comes to pass,(look, it will come,)then shall they knowthat a prophethas been amongthem.
