He went back into the house of Hades. I stayed, hoping some other hero of older days might come. I might have seen men of still older time — Theseus and Peirithous, the gods’ glorious children — but before that the tribes of the dead gathered with an eerie cry, and pale fear took me: that dread Persephone might send the Gorgon head of some terrible monster up from Hades. I went at once to the ship and told the crew to embark and cast off. The Ocean stream bore them on the current; then they bent to the oars and rowed. So we left that place and sailed back toward Circe’s island, as she had told us we must.
