And the Ziphitescameunto Saulto Gibeah, saying,Doth not Davidhidehimself in the hillof Hachilah, which is beforeJeshimon?
Then Saularose, and went downto the wildernessof Ziph, having threethousandchosenmenof Israelwith him, to seekDavidin the wildernessof Ziph.
And Saulpitchedin the hillof Hachilah, which is beforeJeshimon,by the way.But Davidabodein the wilderness, and he sawthat Saulcameafterhim into the wilderness.
Davidtherefore sent outspies, and understoodthat Saulwas comein very deed.
And Davidarose, and cameto the placewhere Saulhad pitched:and Davidbeheldthe placewhere Saullay, and Abnerthe sonof Ner,the captainof his host:and Saullayin the trench, and the peoplepitchedround abouthim.
Then answeredDavidand saidto Ahimelechthe Hittite, and to Abishaithe sonof Zeruiah, brotherto Joab, saying,Who will go downwith me to Saulto the camp? And Abishaisaid,I will go downwith thee.
So Davidand Abishaicameto the peopleby night:and, behold, Saullaysleepingwithin the trench, and his spearstuckin the groundat his bolster:but Abnerand the peoplelayround abouthim.
Then saidAbishaito David,Godhath deliveredthine enemyinto thine handthis day:now therefore let me smitehim, I pray thee, with the speareven to the earthat once, and I will not smite him the second time.
And Davidsaidto Abishai,Destroyhim not: for who can stretch forthhis handagainst the LORD'Sanointed, and be guiltless?
Davidsaidfurthermore, As the LORDliveth, the LORDshall smitehim; or his dayshall cometo die;or he shall descendinto battle, and perish.
The LORDforbidthat I should stretch forthmine handagainst the LORD'Sanointed:but, I pray thee, takethou now the spearthat is at his bolster, and the cruseof water, and let us go.
So Davidtookthe spearand the cruseof waterfrom Saul'sbolster;and they gat them away, and no man sawit, nor knewit, neither awaked:for they were all asleep;because a deep sleepfrom the LORDwas fallenupon them.
Then Davidwent overto the other side, and stoodon the topof an hillafar off;a greatspacebeing between them:
And Davidcriedto the people, and to Abnerthe sonof Ner,saying,Answerestthou not, Abner? Then Abneransweredand said,Who art thou that criestto the king?
And Davidsaidto Abner,Art not thou a valiant man?and who is like to thee in Israel?wherefore then hast thou not keptthy lordthe king?for there cameoneof the peoplein to destroythe kingthy lord.
This thingis not goodthat thou hast done.As the LORDliveth,ye are worthyto die, because ye have not keptyour master, the LORD'Sanointed. And now seewhere the king'sspearis, and the cruseof waterthat was at his bolster.
And SaulknewDavid'svoice,and said,Is this thy voice,my sonDavid?And Davidsaid,It is my voice,my lord,O king.
And he said,Wherefore doth my lordthus pursueafterhis servant?for what have I done?or what evilis in mine hand?
Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lordthe kinghearthe wordsof his servant. If the LORDhave stirred thee upagainst me, let him acceptan offering:but if they be the childrenof men, cursedbe they beforethe LORD;for they have drivenme out this dayfrom abidingin the inheritanceof the LORD,saying,Go,serveothergods.
Now therefore, let not my bloodfallto the earthbefore the faceof the LORD:for the kingof Israelis come outto seekaflea,as when one doth hunta partridgein the mountains.
Then saidSaul,I have sinned:return,my sonDavid:for I will no more do thee harm, because my soulwas preciousin thine eyesthis day:behold, I have played the fool, and have erredexceedingly.
And Davidansweredand said,Behold the king'sspear!and let oneof the young mencome overand fetchit.
The LORDrenderto every manhis righteousnessand his faithfulness:for the LORDdeliveredthee into my handto day,but I wouldnot stretch forthmine handagainst the LORD'Sanointed.
And, behold, as thy lifewas much set bythis dayin mine eyes,so let my lifebe much set byin the eyesof the LORD,and let him deliverme out of all tribulation.
Then Saulsaidto David,Blessedbe thou, my sonDavid:thou shalt both dogreatthings, and also shalt stillprevail. So Davidwenton his way,and Saulreturnedto his place.
