If he be ableto fightwith me, and to killme, then will we be your servants:but if I prevailagainst him, and killhim, then shall ye be our servants, and serveus.
And the Philistinesaid,I defythe armiesof Israelthis day;giveme a man, that we may fighttogether.
When Sauland all Israelheardthose wordsof the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatlyafraid.
Now Davidwas the sonof that Ephrathiteof Bethlehemjudah, whose namewas Jesse;and he had eightsons:and the manwentamong menfor an old manin the daysof Saul.
And the threeeldestsonsof Jessewentand followedSaulto the battle:and the namesof his threesonsthat wentto the battlewere Eliabthe firstborn, and nextunto him Abinadab, and the thirdShammah.
And Davidwas the youngest:and the threeeldestfollowedSaul.
But Davidwentand returnedfrom Saulto feedhis father'ssheepat Bethlehem.
And the Philistinedrew nearmorningand evening, and presentedhimself fortydays.
And Jessesaidunto Davidhis son,Takenow for thy brethrenan ephahof thisparchedcorn, and these tenloaves,and runto the campto thy brethren;
And carrythese tencheesesunto the captainof their thousand, and lookhow thy brethrenfare, and taketheir pledge.

And Davidrose up earlyin the morning, and leftthe sheepwith a keeper, and took, and went,as Jessehad commandedhim; and he cameto the trench,as the hostwas going forthto the fight, and shoutedfor the battle.
For Israeland the Philistineshad put the battle in array, armyagainstarmy.
And Davidlefthis carriagein the handof the keeperof the carriage, and raninto the army, and cameand salutedhis brethren.
And as he talkedwith them, behold, there came upthe champion, the Philistineof Gath,Goliathby name, out of the armiesof the Philistines, and spakeaccording to the samewords:and Davidheardthem.
And all the menof Israel, when they sawthe man, fledfrom him,and were soreafraid.
And the menof Israelsaid,Have ye seenthis manthat is come up?surely to defyIsraelis he come up:and it shall be, that the manwho killethhim, the kingwill enrichhim with greatriches, and will givehim his daughter, and makehis father'shousefreein Israel.
And Davidspaketo the menthat stoodby him, saying,What shall be doneto the manthat killeththisPhilistine, and taketh awaythe reproachfrom Israel?for who is this uncircumcisedPhilistine, that he should defythe armiesof the livingGod?
And the peopleansweredhim after this manner, saying,So shall it be doneto the manthat killethhim.
And Eliabhis eldestbrotherheardwhen he spakeunto the men;and Eliab'sangerwas kindledagainst David, and he said,Why camest thou downhither? and with whom hast thou leftthosefewsheepin the wilderness?I knowthy pride, and the naughtinessof thine heart;for thou art come downthat thou mightest seethe battle.
And Davidsaid,What have I now done?Is there not a cause?
And he turnedfrom himtowardanother, and spakeafter the same manner:and the peopleansweredhim againafter the formermanner.
And when the wordswere heardwhich Davidspake, they rehearsedthem beforeSaul:and he sentfor him.
And Davidsaidto Saul,Let no man'sheartfailbecause of him; thy servantwill goand fightwith this Philistine.
And Saulsaidto David,Thou art not ableto goagainst this Philistineto fightwith him: for thou art but a youth, and he a manof warfrom his youth.
And Davidsaidunto Saul,Thy servantkepthis father'ssheep, and there camea lion, and a bear, and tooka lambout of the flock:
And I went outafterhim, and smotehim, and deliveredit out of his mouth:and when he aroseagainst me, I caughthim by his beard, and smotehim, and slewhim.
Thy servantslewboth the lionand the bear:and this uncircumcisedPhilistineshall be as oneof them, seeing he hath defiedthe armiesof the livingGod.
Davidsaidmoreover, The LORDthat deliveredme out of the pawof the lion, and out of the pawof the bear,he will deliverme out of the handof this Philistine. And Saulsaidunto David,Go,and the LORDbe with thee.
And SaularmedDavidwith his armour, and he putan helmetof brassupon his head;also he armedhim with a coat of mail.
And Davidgirdedhis swordupon his armour, and he assayedto go;for he had not provedit. And Davidsaidunto Saul,I cannotgowith these; for I have not provedthem. And Davidputthem off him.
And he tookhis staffin his hand, and chosehim fivesmoothstonesout of the brook, and putthem in a shepherd'sbagwhich he had, even in a scrip;and his slingwas in his hand:and he drew nearto the Philistine.
And the Philistinecameonand drew nearunto David;and the manthat barethe shieldwent beforehim.

And the Philistinesaidto David,Cometo me, and I will givethy fleshunto the fowlsof the air,and to the beastsof the field.

This daywill the LORDdeliverthee into mine hand;and I will smitethee, and takethine headfrom thee; and I will givethe carcasesof the hostof the Philistinesthis dayunto the fowlsof the air,and to the wild beastsof the earth;that all the earthmay knowthat there isa Godin Israel.
And all this assemblyshall knowthat the LORDsavethnot with swordand spear:for the battleis the LORD'S,and he will giveyou into our hands.
