And when the peoplesawthat Mosesdelayedto come downout of the mount,the peoplegathered themselves togetherunto Aaron,and saidunto him, Up,makeus gods,which shall gobeforeus; foras forthis Moses,the manthat broughtus up out of the landof Egypt,we wot
And Aaronsaidunto them, Break offthe goldenearrings,whicharein the earsof your wives,of your sons,and of your daughters,and bring
And all the peoplebrake offthe goldenearringswhichwerein their ears,and broughtthemunto Aaron.
And he receivedthemat their hand,and fashionedit with a graving tool,after he had madeit a moltencalf:and they said,Thesebethy gods,O Israel,which broughtthee up out of the landof Egypt.
And when Aaronsawit, he builtan altarbeforeit; and Aaronmade proclamation,and said,To morrowisa feastto the LORD.
And they rose up earlyon the morrow,and offeredburnt offerings,and broughtpeace offerings;and the peoplesatdown to eatand to drink,and rose upto play.
And the LORDsaidunto Moses,Go,get thee down;for thy people,which thou broughtestout of the landof Egypt,have corrupted
They have turnedaside quicklyout of the waywhich I commandedthem: they have madethem a moltencalf,and have worshippedit, and have sacrificedthereunto, and said,Thesebethy gods,O Israel,which have brought thee upout of the landof Egypt.
And the LORDsaidunto Moses,I have seenthis people,and, behold, itisa stiffneckedpeople:
Now therefore let me alone,that my wrathmay wax hotagainst them, and that I may consumethem: and I will makeof thee a greatnation.
And Mosesbesoughtthe LORDhis God,and said,LORD,why doth thy wrathwax hotagainst thy people,which thou hast brought forthout of the landof Egyptwith greatpower,and with a mightyhand?
Wherefore should the Egyptiansspeak,and say,For mischiefdid he bringthem out, to slaythem in the mountains,and to consumethem from the faceof the earth?Turnfrom thy fiercewrath,and repentof this evilagainst thy people.
RememberAbraham,Isaac,and Israel,thy servants,to whom thou swarestby thine own self, and saidstunto them, I will multiplyyour seedas the starsof heaven,and all this landthat I have spokenof will I giveunto your seed,and they shall inherititfor ever.
And the LORDrepentedof the evilwhich he thoughtto dounto his people.
And Mosesturned,and went downfrom the mount,and the twotablesof the testimonywerein his hand:the tableswerewrittenon boththeir sides;on the one side and on the otherwerethey written.
And the tableswerethe workof God,and the writingwasthe writingof God,gravenupon the tables.
And when Joshuaheardthe noiseof the peopleas they shouted,he saidunto Moses,There isa noiseof warin the camp.
And he said,It isnot the voiceofthem thatshoutfor mastery,neitheris itthe voiceofthem thatcryfor being overcome:butthe noiseofthem thatsingdo I hear.
And it came to pass, as soon as he came nighunto the camp,that he sawthe calf,and the dancing:and Moses'angerwaxed hot,and he castthe tablesout of his hands,and brakethem beneaththe mount.
And he tookthe calfwhich they had made,and burntitin the fire,and grounditto powder,and strawedituponthe water,and made the childrenof Israeldrink
And Mosessaidunto Aaron,What didthis peopleunto thee, that thou hast broughtso greata sin
And Aaronsaid,Let not the angerof my lordwax hot:thou knowestthe people,that theyare seton mischief.
For they saidunto me, Makeus gods,which shall gobeforeus: foras forthis Moses,the manthat brought us upout of the landof Egypt,we wot
And I saidunto them, Whosoever hath any gold,let them breakitoff. So they gaveitme: then I castit into the fire,and there came outthis calf.
And when Mosessawthat the peoplewerenaked;(for Aaronhad made them nakeduntotheirshameamong their enemies:)
Then Mosesstoodin the gateof the camp,and said,Whoison the LORD'Sside?let him comeunto me. And all the sonsof Levigathered
And he saidunto them, Thus saiththe LORDGodof Israel,Putevery manhis swordby his side,andgoin and outfrom gateto gatethroughout the camp,and slayevery manhis brother,and every manhis companion,and every manhis neighbour.
And the childrenof Levididaccording to the wordof Moses:and there fellof the peoplethat dayabout threethousandmen.
For Moseshad said,Consecrate yourselvesto dayto the LORD,evenevery manupon his son,and upon his brother;that he may bestowupon you a blessingthis day.
And it came to pass on the morrow,that Mosessaidunto the people,Ye have sinneda greatsin:and now I will go upunto the LORD;peradventureI shall make an atonementforyour sin.
And Mosesreturnedunto the LORD,and said,Oh,this peoplehave sinneda greatsin,and have madethem godsof gold.
Yet now, if thou wilt forgivetheir sin—;and if not, blotme, I pray thee, out of thy bookwhich thou hast written.
And the LORDsaidunto Moses,Whosoeverhath sinnedagainst me, him will I blot outof my book.
Therefore now go,leadthe peopleuntothe placeof which I have spokenunto thee: behold, mine Angelshall gobeforethee: nevertheless in the daywhen I visitI will visittheir sin
And the LORDplaguedthe people,becausethey madethe calf,whichAaronmade.
