Belshazzarthe kingmadea greatfeastto a thousandof his lords,and drankwinebeforethe thousand.
Belshazzar,whiles he tastedthe wine,commandedto bringthe goldenand silvervesselswhich his fatherNebuchadnezzarhad takenout ofthe templewhichwasin Jerusalem;that the king,and his princes,his wives,and his concubines,might drink
Thenthey broughtthe goldenvesselsthat were takenout ofthe templeof the houseof Godwhichwasat Jerusalem;and the king,and his princes,his wives,and his concubines,drank
They drankwine,and praisedthe godsof gold,and of silver,of brass,of iron,of wood,and of stone.
In the same hourcame forthfingersof a man'shand,and wroteover againstthe candlestickuponthe plaisterof the wallof the king'spalace:and the kingsawthe partof the handthat wrote.
Thenthe king'scountenancewas changed,and his thoughtstroubledhim, so that the jointsof his loinswere loosed,and his kneessmoteoneagainst another.
The kingcriedaloudto bringin the astrologers,the Chaldeans,and the soothsayers.Andthe kingspake,and saidto the wisemenof Babylon,Whosoevershall readthiswriting,and shewme the interpretationthereof, shall be clothedwith scarlet,andhavea chainof goldabouthis neck,and shall be the thirdrulerin the kingdom.

There isa manin thy kingdom,in whomisthe spiritof the holygods;and in the daysof thy fatherlightand understandingand wisdom,like the wisdomof the gods,was foundin him; whom the kingNebuchadnezzarthy father,the king,I say, thy father,mademasterof the magicians,astrologers,Chaldeans,andsoothsayers;
Forasmuch asan excellentspirit,and knowledge,and understanding,interpretingof dreams,and shewingof hard sentences,and dissolvingof doubts,were foundin the same Daniel,whom the kingnamedBelteshazzar:nowlet Danielbe called,and he will shewthe interpretation.
Thenwas Danielbrought inbeforethe king.Andthe kingspakeand saidunto Daniel,Artthouthat Daniel,whichartofthe childrenof the captivityof Judah,whom the kingmy fatherbroughtout ofJewry?
I have even heardof thee, that the spiritof the godsisin thee,andthatlightand understandingand excellentwisdomis found
And nowthe wisemen, the astrologers,have been broughtin beforeme, that they should readthiswriting,and make knownunto me the interpretationthereof: but they couldnotshewthe interpretationof the thing:
And Ihave heardof thee,that thou canstmakeinterpretations,and dissolvedoubts:nowifthou canstreadthe writing,and make knownto me the interpretationthereof, thou shalt be clothedwith scarlet,andhavea chainof goldaboutthy neck,and shalt be the thirdrulerin the kingdom.
ThenDanielansweredand saidbeforethe king,Let thy giftsbeto thyself, and givethy rewardsto another;yetI will readthe writingunto the king,and make knownto him the interpretation.
O thouking,the most highGodgaveNebuchadnezzarthy fathera kingdom,and majesty,and glory,and honour:
And forthe majestythat he gavehim, allpeople,nations,and languages,trembledand fearedbeforehim:whom he wouldhe slew;and whom he wouldhe kept alive;and whom he wouldhe set up;and whom he wouldhe put down.
But when his heartwas lifted up,and his mindhardenedin pride,he was deposedfromhis kinglythrone,and they tookhis gloryfrom him:
And he was drivenfromthe sonsof men;and his heartwas madelikethe beasts,and his dwellingwaswith the wild asses:they fedhim with grasslike oxen,and his bodywas wetwith the dewof heaven;tillhe knewthat the most highGodruledin the kingdomof men,andthathe appointethoverit whomsoeverhe will.
And thouhis son,O Belshazzar,hast nothumbledthine heart,thoughthou knewestallthis;
But hast lifted upthyself againstthe Lordof heaven;and they have broughtthe vesselsof his housebeforethee, and thou,and thy lords,thy wives,and thy concubines,have drunkwinein them; and thou hast praisedthe godsof silver,and gold,of brass,iron,wood,and stone,which seenot,norhear,norknow:and the Godin whose handthy breathis, and whoseareallthy ways,hast thou notglorified:
Thenwas the partof the handsentfromhim;and thiswritingwas written.
And thisisthe writingthat was written,MENE,MENE,TEKEL,UPHARSIN.
