118. Origen, the father of biblical criticism and exegesis, was born at Alexandria in 185 A.D., and died at Tyre in 254, from sufferings which he had undergone not long previously, during the Decian persecution.
119. In 232 A.D., Origen was excommunicated, chiefly because of his denial of eternal punishment.
